If you’re into street art and live around LA, NOW is the time to get out and see the best collection/s of work that have ever been put together. It’d likely take a full day to catch most of it but it’ll be worth the journey.
First stop – Art in the Streets exhibit at MOCA in Little Tokyo. They’re billing this as the first large-scale collection of ‘street art’ gathered in a fancy museum. No matter what you wanna call it, the list of artists involved is staggering. Shepard Fairey, Banksy, JR, Os Gemeos, RETNA, REVOKE, Swoon, and tons more. The show will be running through August 8th, so you have some time.
Second stop – Carmichael Gallery in Culver City for Martha Cooper: Remix. Martha Cooper is the NYC photographer responsible a huge chunk of the famous photos of old school graffiti artist throwing pieces up on trains or walls around New York in the ’70s and ’80s. Some of those original artists, along with an A-list collection of their contempforaries, have created new paintings based on Martha’s photos. Check out the awesome catalog here. The show runs through May 7th and there are a lot of pieces that are very reasonably priced.
Third stops – LA Freewalls Project. I’m not even sure where all these walls are but I keep seeing them pop-up on JetSetGraffiti.com and I wish they had a map so I could either bike or drive around and check them all out. Shepard Fairey just finished a Ronald Regan piece. How & Nosm have been around LA and going big with Dabs & Myla. They did two, equally impressive, massive walls over the last couple weeks and you can see them by scrolling down here. I’m going to email the folks at Jet-Set and try to get locations for all the Free Walls stuff. In the meantime you should just scroll through their blog and also check out ROA’s stuff and via a RVCA project, i believe, this vid of El Mac and Retna.
Check out our reviews from Primary Flight in Miami to see more murals from many of the artists listed above. Primary Flight 2010, Primary Flight 2009, Primary Flight 2008
Lastly… LA Taco seems to be keeping up with two great things in LA, street art and.. TACOS! Check out KATSU getting his at MOCA... nuts!
