Curated by Lesley Reppeteaux and Daryll Peirce, Workhors Studios opened its doors on Saturday night for its 13 Wheeler exhibition, a showcase of art from John John Jesse, Jeremy Fish, Tara McPherson, Derek Hess, Gary Benzel, Chris Ryniak, Logan Hicks, Deth P. Sun, Scott Saw, Michael Sieben, Blaine Fontana, Poor Al, Daryll Peirce and Lesley Reppeteaux.
It was great to see so much art packed into such a small space. It was a perfect balance of eclectic style and media; everything from very traditional oil painting on ornately framed canvas to spray paint-stenciled skate decks. I arrived early on in the show to find a surprisingly large crowd assembled already. They filtered in and out at a steady rate throughout the duration of the show, populated with the usual suspects including indie art kids, local hipsters, knowledgeable art snobs, as well as a pair of inappropriately intoxicated tourists who relished the free beer provided by Tiger Beer (www.tigerbeer.com). Several of the artists were also in attendance, which was a nice treat. Its always great to put a face to the artwork and to be able to get a bit of a sense of the person behind the piece. Highlights from the evening included the mural collab by Jeremy Fish and Michael Sieben, Jeremy Fish’s mitered and painted skate decks, Daryll Pierce’s homage to Reno and Gary Benzel’s mind boggling woodcuts. The whole evening was a fun mix of great people and great art, a combination which always makes for a lovely Saturday night.
