Corona Del Mar High Rally

Last year at All Tomorrow’s Parties in Long Beach I brought down Bessy from Oregon to sell and give away some Ice Cream. Our best customers that day were Mark and his friends. Almost a year later and numerous run-ins at festivals, I finally got to meet him on his home turf.

On Friday I picked up a bunch of Cream from Mel-o-dee in Santa Ana then headed down to Corona Del Mar High School for a lunchtime Rally. That night was there rivalry football game and what better to get everyone in the mood than Ice Cream. Got there nice and early and got everything situated. Originally I was going to have close to 1000 pieces. CDM is a good size school but much smaller that Wilson High School in Long Beach where I went. So I figured I’d cut down the quantity and stock up on quality like Choco Tacos, Reese’s, Drumsticks, and Fat Boys. I think it would have been wise to meet somewhere in between.

As soon as the lunch bell rang I knew I was in trouble. It was like that scene in Dazed and Confused when all the kids get out of school for summer. Lots of screaming and running. I didn’t know that ice cream could be given away that fast. When you’re working with a short lunch break there is only one goal. 22 minutes later we were fresh out. Over 700 tasty treats dispensed from one ice cream truck in 22 minutes. That’s a record that will be tough to beat.

Now that I’ve done it I have a little better idea what to expect next time I roll up to give away Ice Cream at a high school. And, i’ll make sure to have a few more cases on hand so no one gets left out.

GO SEA KINGS!
