Thanks to Flavorpill, Jeremiah scored some tix to the M83 show on Tuesday Night at the Avalon. We gathered a mini crew and headed on over. It was my first time being there since it was The Palace. Seemed all right for all I could tell. It was a bit different but I can’t say for better or for worse.
Earlier in the day I had done a little research into M83 and The Double. Mainly to find out if M83 was gonna be a band or DJ or what. Also to see if The Double was worth getting there on time for. Judging by a few pics on the M83 site, it looked like a four-piece. And after a few minutes of listening to The Double, I realized they were worth checking out too.
It’s hard to place The Double’s music, The lead singer, David Greenhill, sounds a bit influenced by Interpol and NYC. Not too surprising since they’re on the same label and have opened for Interpol….and they’re from NYC too. When you go to a lot of shows, the music that’s different and daring is usually the stuff that stands out. The Double definitely have that in their favor. They went back and forth from catchy dark keyboard influenced tunes to space out sessions. Check out some tracks on their site.
So we all figured M83 was either gonna be great or a bust. Look at this quote from the LA Times site “France’s Anthony Gonzalez performs lush, guitar-and-keyboard soundscapes that have earned comparisions with My Bloody Valentine.” That’s enough to spark my interest but in hindsite, can’t say there’s much validity in the statement. At least the MBV part. My biggest gripe is when bands play to tracks. It makes it feel like you’re not getting anything unique from a show. Especially when you got someone standing in front of a keyboard, and you hear keys, but it’s magically coming from some computer or mysterious place. Jeremiah and I both agreed that with the addition of two more people on stage you could cut out almost all the prerecorded parts. We woke Vanessa up and as we walked to the car we wondered what could’ve been.
