Lucent Lamour – A Visionary Love Fest

The Lucent / DoLab parties are the best in town. The full blown versions, like the one on Saturday night, only seem to go down a few times a year. Once they outgrew their downtown Los Angeles warehouse, they had to find somewhere new. Instead of slowly working their way up, they went straight to the big time by renting out the Historic St. Viviana’s Cathedral. With a capacity of fifteen hundred and weeks of preperation, the buzz was on about how HOT this party was going to be.

A lot of the normal players were taking part. Lorin/Bassnectar was manning the tables for almost two hours and Lucent Dossier performed a 17th Century Scandelous Fashion Show. There was also plenty of entertainment and art in the outdoor garden. Helios Jive fit in perfect out there for people who needed a breather from all the dancing and sweating that was going on inside.

I’m still trying to figure out exactly what this “scene” is. As far as I can tell a lot of the people have strong Burning Man roots. Which means that they aren’t afraid to play dress up and let their freak flags fly. The reason I enjoy these parties so much is because everyone is so friendly and respectful. There are no ego’s and everyone contributes something once they walk in the door. The sense of community that is shared by everyone I have yet to see matched in LA. It was good to see alot of friends I met at previous Do Lab parties and on Xingolati.

After rolling by a birthday party for a friend, Timothy and I found the church and secured a parking spot out front. Surprisingly there weren’t too many takers for the cream. I can’t say I was pushing too hard and once I saw Neal from Xingolati I decided to mostly let the people who really wanted ice cream make their way over. Once my friends Rob and JR made it I locked up Bessy and headed on in. I had yet to see the inside and was glad I waited til it was full up before checking in. What a site to see. After a bit I stocked up my bag to sling some cream in the garden. Random, AKA Buffmonster, requested a UFO but they were all in the truck. I handed him the bag o’ fun and once I got back it was evident he wasn’t parting ways with it. It’s fun to watch someone else in action. It’s just a bummer when they’re better at it.

As far as I know, The Do Lab started doing lighting while back then quickly moved up the ranks to become one of the top event production companies around town. It only took a few seconds after walking in the doors to realize this. It was one of those nights where, before I entered, I kept saying “It’s gonna be a great night”. Then once I got inside, it was, “This is so amazing”. Even as I drove Timothy home I couldn’t stop gushing about it. There is a whole true underground in this world that needs to unite to help create the future we all want to live in. I’m not sure exactly sure how this will all play out but I see it pretty clearly. As long as we all keep busting our asses and keep everything high quality, it’s gonna happen. Which reminds me, I heard Mutaytor got a record deal….ah ha…proof!

So the night was a blast and I didn’t get to bed til 5:30. I’m sure there were plenty of people that didn’t sleep at all. Even the cops who rolled by that night were cool. I talked to them for a bit while I was loading up some cream and I have to say they were the nicest cops I’ve ever met in LA. Now you know something’s really going right here.

Check out Craigs photos too.
