The Like and Army Navy at Cinespace

Over the course of the last few months I’ve had the pleasure of seeing The Like in three different shows in three different venues. Among the three, this one at Cinespace, which was the most intimate of rooms, left the biggest impression. Although the hype wasn’t quite what it was for, say Editors or the Subways, the room was packed and the audience every bit as appreciative as I’ve seen for any other band in this room. The girls opened the set with “June Gloom” and played through about 45 minutes. I don’t know that I ever actually heard Charlotte and Tennessee so locked on as they were on this night; and with Z’s vocals and guitar soaring throughout, this set was the best I’ve heard from them. I mean, I’ve always liked the Like, but everything was punchy and tight on this night. “Mon nom est superfantastique!”

Starting things out, Army Navy eased into their set most confidently. Justin and the fellas moved through the set much like a dj might from song to song with little interruption or small talk. The tunes reminisce of all the best of the late 80’s early 90’s, as their myspace page will attest to, yet they do it with convincing originality. This being the second time seeing them, I need say the show is tight and well thought. Worth checking out at your convenience, you won’t be disappointed.

When it was all done I went home for some cookies and ice cream. Really! Something to think about at 1:30 in the morning! Thanks to all and to Henry Miller.

Peace.
