When I came to Brooklyn, I ended up crashing at my friend Tyler’s pad which is half a block away from the Kool Man ice cream truck warehouse. When I woke up the following day I stopped by to see if I’d be able to stock up on ice cream. As I approached the front desk, this cute gal asked me what I was doing there. It just so happened that I was wondering the same thing , what was I doing here? (ha ha).
I rambled off my spiel then she started telling me about how she just graduated from Julliard and was driving an ice cream truck for the summer to help promote her flute music. She had been on the road for a couple weeks and was in the process of finding a way she could play her CD of groovin’ flute tunes over the ice cream truck speaker.
For a couple weeks we traded emails and calls trying to line up a time where I could go out in her truck and take a bunch of pics and shoot some video about the life of Fluter Scooter. On Thursday the stars finally aligned. I met Drea and her friend Lisa at the Kool Man warehouse and we hit the road. The first mission was to get lunch, next was gas. It probably would have been a good idea to the latter first because we ended up running out of gas next to park.
After filling up, we headed back towards McCarren Park then parked near the track where the girls pulled out their instruments and started playing for everyone. It sounded great and I guess it ended up working out pretty well because when I ran into Drea today, she said she stayed there all day and made some good money.
Check out a few tracks on Drea’s myspace page. There’s a great little bio on there. It must’ve been pretty cool to play with Herbie Hancock.
interested in renting a kool man truck for a PUMA photo shoot next week.
