I Made it to Texas to find myself on the cover of the Austin Chronicle. WOW! What a pleasant surprise. I met Austin (the writer) while in town for South by Southwest. He was editor of the Daily Texan and Doug had recently written an Ice Cream Man article for the paper. We crossed paths again at Bonnaroo and then a few weeks ago he mentioned that the Chronicle was interested in doing something.
The initial idea was pretty small but after 8 hours of interview footage and dozens of pics, they figured it would be a perfect tie-in with cream slinging at Austin City Limits Festival this weekend.
I left Long Beach on Tuesday after picking up some new CD’s at Fingerprint’s (thanks bro for the b-day gift certificate). Bessie wasn’t going to make it across the desert 1400 miles so Bessita did the honors. Around 11:30 I rolled into Tuscon to crash at MMarys, Jeremiah’s moms house. I had this crazy idea that if I woke up at 6 in the morning, I could somehow make it to Austin by 8 to see Calexico perform for the TV version of Austin City Limits. Even in Bessita, the 900 plus miles didn’t put me in til 9:30 though.
Woke up this morn and headed to KVRX on the UT campus to sit in for Doug’s Country Radio show. We got to spin some Avett Brothers, Two Gallants, Mavericks, and even sneaked in a track from All Night Radio’s live KVRX studio session a couple years back. By the time we got to Mi Madres, I picked up a Chronicle to find Elvis and I on the cover.
After that I headed to Amy’s Ice Cream to get a tour of their factory and to get a crash course from Steve O on scooping ice cream properly. That may sound funny but I’ve never (commercially) scooped ice cream before. They’re kicking us down some cream and Fruitiki is donating a bunch of all natural fruit pops to give away. And…as if that wasn’t enough, Guitar Center is helping fund a stash of thousands of classic treats like Pink Panther, Powerpuff Girls, Bomb Pops, Creamsicles and tons more.
It’ll be a while before I can get some new stuff up but we’ve definitely got some good stuff on the way.
