Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton at El Rey

As I walked into the El Rey I was met with quite a few surprises. For one the main standing area was filled with chairs. And it looked as if they did some winter time cleaning. Before the walls looked as if something could ooze out and attack you while you were rocking out, but now they are clean enough to eat off (I don’t really recommend doing that though).

It was a nice, calm, and relaxed vibe in the air as Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton took the stage. Emily, a Canadian and self proclaimed native of Los Angeles, was right at home. She often took little breaks in between songs to talk to the audience, from things ranging from a story of how she stopped paying rent on a piano she kept, to the apartment in Los Angeles where most of her album, Knives Don’t Have Your Back, was written. She played her entire album including crowd favorites ‘Lottery’, and ‘Maid Needs a Maid’.
