What are the chances of hearing your favorite song first when you go to a concert? My concern is usually that my favorite song is the same as everyone else’s and that it won’t get played ’til the encore. Which sucks when you miss the encore while running to grab your ice cream truck to sling cream after the show.

Sparklehorse played at the Fonda a few nights ago and Craig (aka CrashakaAsian Elvisaka great photographer) and I rolled up to Hollywood for the show. I’ve been a huge Sparklehorse fan from when I used to work at Fingerprints in Long Beach back in the 90’s. The last time front man Mark Linkous came through town, in 2001 he played at The Temple Bar in Santa Monica. That show was amazing and it’s hard to believe it was six years ago.

The five piece incarnation of Sparklehorse hit the stage with “Gold Days,” which.happens to be my favorite song. I plastered on my perma grin and rocked back and forth by myself while singing/mouthing the words”‘may all your days be gold my child.” Thank some heavenly being that Mark is back making music and playing it live.

While standing on the floor about ten to fifteen people deep I wondered what songs I’d like to hear. It instantly struck me that I had no preference. Every one of Sparklehorse’s albums is solid and filled with choice cuts. Some of my favorite tracks of the night were “Hammering the Cramps”, “Ghost in the Sky”, and “Someday.” “Shade and Honey” from his latest offering, Dreamt For Light Years In the Belly of a Mountain was also a standout track. I never got around to making a top 10 list for last year but this would definitely have been on it. Thanks to Danger Mouse for helping out with production on the album. They’ll be partnering up on a new project too, so keep your ears peeled.

I missed Jesse Sykes because I was A)Grubbing on Philippe’s French Dip Sandwiches B)dropping some good off at Jeremiah’s C)Hittin’ Logan Hicks up for some artwork and talking about starting new project similar to Lilcoop and D) kickin’ down security guards down with cream.

The night ended with us giving away a bunch of treats out front then heading backstage to make sure the band was taken care of. I was hoping to load the bus up but was completely cleaned out by 1AM and hurried back to Long Beach to make a pitstop at Alex’s before calling it a night.
