What do me, Lucinda Williams and Adrian Grenier from HBO’s Entourage have in common??? Well, not a whole lot, but we all made our way out to see Icelandic singer/songwriter Lovisa Sigrunardottir better known as Lay Low play at the Silverlake Lounge and The Tangier in LA. Lay Low has been sweeping the Icelandic music seen like a storm for the past few years and with here debut album “Please Don’t Hate Me” she topped the Icelandic charts, knocking down the country’s king of Rock and Roll Bubbi Mortens. Her latest single could even be heard on a recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy, unfortunately I missed that mainly because I have never watched the show in my life and have no plans on doing so.
When I walked into the dark Silverlake Lounge there were only a handful of people there and Lay Low was to be on stage in 30 min, but just before the band was to go on stage and get their gear ready they all walked in, I took my spot up front and when I looked back after the first song the place was packed. And the crowd got what they paid for, Lay Low ‘s music is a mix of Blues/Country/Folk with Lovisa leading the way with her unique voice and some very impressive acoustic guitar playing mixed in with some banjo, slide guitars, drums and bass, all the ingredients needed for a great performance, and both nights the band delivered exactly that. Both shows were that perfect mix you need when going to a show, good musicians, good music, good crowd and good people; sure made those two shows something I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
If you had the chance to catch them in NYC for some shows then lucky you, if not don’t worry I’m sure they’ll be back.
