Last Wednesday I had the pleasure of taking Bessita up to the Villa Hermosa apartments in L.A. for Kaboom! playground build and giving ice cream out to the lucky kids and the people working hard to make it happen.
Kaboom! gets together various groups of volunteers to put their resources together to help build a playspace in areas where kids don’t have access to one. They’ve been doing a lot to help rebuild in New Orleans and were in L.A. with help from Lunchables, Insite Development and local community volunteers to give kids in the neighborhood a place to play.
Naturally, the possibility to give kids some ice cream to help celebrate their new playground is a tough one to pass up, so I loaded up Bessita and drove up to the USC area to unload some ice cream. As soon as I arrived I was mobbed by excited kids, but I was able to get them to calm down enough to make their picks. In no time at all I was able to clear out all the ice cream I brought and got a little tour of the new playground. A lot of people put their time and hard work into building it, just for the benefit of the community. It’s things like that that give you a little extra faith in people; seeing a bunch of strangers come together to do something good for others is fun to watch.
After sating the crowd on the hot, hot day and taking a few pics, I headed back down to Long Beach, glad to have done something, however small.
