Too often bands sound the same and lack the spark or freshness that we love about music. Although their sound isnt all that original, A Hawk and a Hacksaw, is definitely something fresh in the over-saturated scene of bland music. Taking inspiration from Eastern Europe, specifically Balkan traditions, they have reinvented a sound that most of us arent very familiar with.
Performing live at the Echoplex they proved that none of their four CDs does them justice. To really appreciate their sound and their energy you have to see them live. Although performing to a half empty club, they didnt disappoint.
Playing multiple instruments at the same time, accordion and the drums, Jeremy Barnes was nothing less than impressive. Heather Trost on violin was equally talented. Together their sound is hard to forget and may even make you nostalgic for a place youve never been.
