The house lights dropped to total darkness. Silhouettes could barely be made out until a stage wide “Lite Brite” style rig illuminated the entire band from behind. The Dandy Warhols then rocked impeccably for almost 2 hours to the delight of Friday night Angelenos in full on party mode.
Choosing to play only a few tracks from their self released new album Earth to the Dandy Warhols, the Dandys ripped through a ton of back catalog pleasing the masses and keeping even the hard core fans satisfied by peppering the set with deep album cuts that rarely surface in their live shows.
The relationship between Anton Newcombe of the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols was the focus of 2004’s superb documentary DIG! . It was shot over 7 years and gives a great look at the Dandy Warhols as they battled music politics, record deals, and the rigors of touring. I highly recommend checking it out as it’s one of the better music documentaries made in the last decade.
