When you have been living in sub zero temperatures for a few months it’s not hard for one’s mind to go to go back to warmer days in southern California, particularly Ventura County. Surprisingly, there are a half dozen bands hailing from the “Little Miss Sunshine” town once known as San Buenaventura that are buring through the So Cal scene today and it’s not just the music of the Curren brothers. As a little known strip of the Pacific Coast Highwat that most people leave in their rear view mirror as they race on their way to Santa Barbara, Ventura surely is a musical hub linking the greater LA basin to towns on the cenral coast.
One song that always brings me back to the sunsets of the west coast no matter where I am is “Shot Like a Bird” by Ventura locals Franklin For Short. Their surf like pop melody just brings a smile to my Scandinavian face each time I hear it and reminds me of that perfect C-Street right wave known throughout the surf community as being one of California’s premier surf spots. All in all the tunes coming out of this small beach community are some of the least heard on the west coast. So be sure to check out bands like Tall Tales and Deepakalypse for some more true Ventura County flare!
