I will be in a state of nirvana listening to Beirut at the Coachella polo fields. The sauna heat of Indio matched with the old world refinement of the melodies leaves little more to be desired.
With a subtle, yet noteworthy maturation in Balkan composing, the young Beirut has emerged from the studio with a more sophisticated, tailored release for 2009. The creations on March of the Zapotec retain a sense of playful decadence, appreciation for melodrama, and an ironic sincerity that distinguishes Zachary Condon as an instrumental storyteller. Such exquisite elements have caused La Llorona, or The Crybaby, to be our song of the day.
As the final lines croon, Of the things you guessed would come / What a moment it was after all, this is the very sentiment of anticipation and arrival that is so unique to this day of the week. All hail Friday.
