Jeremiah and I went to see Cut Copy at the Henry Fonda Theater, the first of what was supposed to be two nights at the Fonda. The show was oversold by about 300 people and was ultimately shut down by the Fire Marshall at just under an hour into Cut Copys set. Because of the problem with the first nights show, the second night was moved to Club Nokia to accommodate the excess of fans.
Luckily, Jeremiah and I got to the Fonda early and were able to find a seat right in the front of the balcony. It proved to be a good vantage point to see the show and also watch the hundreds of people slowly fill in the floor of the Fonda.
Matt and Kim opened the show playing their DIY rock. Seeing Matt and Kim from the balcony of the Fonda was a treat because the last time I saw them at the Echo I couldnt see anything because I was too short. And, to enjoy Matt and Kim, you really have to see them play, not just listen. Matt and Kim were like little balls of energy on stage, especially Matt, who was constantly jumping around, including standing on his stool while playing keyboards. For the last song, Silver Tiles (a crowd favorite and demo that doesnt even appear on an album) Matt jumped into the crowd and had them hold him upright like a prize fighter after a win, just my feetjust my FEET!
After Matt and Kim, you could tell the crowd was getting revved up to see Cut Copy. People on the floor were dancing to the DJ playing in between sets and when Cut Copy finally took the stage, the crowd exploded when they came out playing Hearts on Fire. I am a fan of Cut Copys newest record, but I confess that I was somewhat disappointed by their live set. Their set sounded great, but that was the problem, it sounded exactly like the record and much of the set appeared to be played on DAT and not live. In fact, at times, it looked like only the drummer was playing anything live.
The crowd didnt mind that much of the set wasnt live though and for the most of Cut Copys abbreviated set, the sea of people on the floor at the Fonda danced like it was New Years Eve. Cut Copys light show was quite impressive even if their live set was not. For me, if Cut Copy didnt have the light show, their set would have been lackluster, but for the rest of the crowd (at least until the Fire Marshall showed up) they were completely engrossed.
