Sometime late last week I was listening to Future Sounds weekly radio show on WOXY and was getting turned on to a bunch of new music. Somewhere near the middle of the show a song came on that instantly got stuck in my head, it was from Avi Buffalo. I had heard the name before but didn’t know anything about them. I paused the WOXY player and opened up Avi’s myspace page and the first thing I noticed was that they were from Long Beach (huge bonus points in ICM land). The first song to start playing was “What’s In It For” and I listened to it all the way through again.
Luck have it that I had been invited to Murufest in Long Beach which is basically a cool house party that takes place once a year near Studebaker and the 405 freeway and… Avi Buffalo was going to be playing. Double up! I knew it was an all ages event which meant that there’d be a lotta young ‘uns there who’d prolly want some free cream. I headed inside and watched The Deep Sea Goes, who’s rockin-ness I enjoyed, and was reminded of the social awkwardness of being at a high school party. I caught up with Scott from We Love LB and chatted for a bit then Frank showed up just in time to snap some photos of Avi Buffalo.
They were playing on the back patio under quite a large overhang and it was getting towards dusk. They started with “What’s In It For” then proceeded to turn off any lights around them to help set the mood for the rest of their set. There were over a hundred people watching but a lot towards the back didn’t seem to care much. Considering they’re still such a young band I was very impressed with their whole set. Afterwards I pulled the truck up in the front driveway and gave away about a hundred free creams. One of the last went to Avi as he was loading out his gear.
Last night as I was having trouble falling asleep I was playing around on my phone and noticed a couple of great lil reviews of Avi’s residency at the Echo this month. You can check Avi out every Tuesday this month at the Echo. They’ve got some other great LB bands joining them too.
also… just saw this too, a future sounds interview with Avi Buffalo
’tis weird cuz it showed up second on the search and didn’t have Avi in there, only “future sounds”
