We’ve been working on an Ice Cream Man video series for the summer and one of the fun parts is researching music for the title sequence. I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who think that putting together tunes for a soundtrack would be the perfect job but it takes a ton of time. Since the series will revolve around me traveling around the country I wanted to be sure to get something that had a ‘driving’ beat. One of the first bands I thought of was Minutemen, thanks in large part to their ode to the road, “Double Nickels on the Dime.” When I was diggin’ through my CDs I found a fIREHOSE)+ album which contains two thirds of the Minutemen, Mike Watt and George Hurley. The album is Live Totem Pole EP and it’s got a bunch of live cuts, mostly covers from the Palamino which used to exist around North Hollywood. They cover Superchunk’s “Slack Motherf_cker”, Public Enemy’s “Sophisticated Bitch” within the seven songs on the album. “The Red and the Black” from Blue Oyster Cult is the song I wanted to use. I love the chug-alug near the beginning and thought it would go well with a rolling ice cream truck. Alas… we’re going for a different track but you should still rock this and… snag the EP.
