While hosting a huge party with tons of bands and beer in the warehouse of a furniture store may not seem like the best idea, somehow the kids at The FMLY were able to pull it off. Featuring performances from RJD2, Voxtrot and Busdriver among many more, this promised to be a huge event.
Jeremiah and I rolled in around 2:30 and pulled up behind the Calbi BBQ truck. The waterslide was in the process of reinflating, so we had to wait if we were going to do some sliding. Despite a low early turnout we were able to start going through ice cream pretty quick. As the day went on, most of the bands that played came out to cool off with an ice cream afterwards, thankful for the tasty treats.
I felt bad for the folks selling beer inside, it seemed like the average age at the show was 16, although I did spot a few 21 pluses with their drinks inside. The warehouse itself was surprisingly cozy. Maybe because of the custom designed furniture lining the place instead of the usual cold walls.
From outside we could hear most of the bands pretty well and were pleasantly surprised by the afternoon sets. Haim particularly caught my attention. We asked one of the revelers who the band was and were told, “it’s three girls and a dude drummer. I don’t know what their name is.” Eventually we were able to figure out, especially when they all came out after their set to cool off.
We went through the last of the ice cream around 7 and took that time to move on, so we ended up missing the later bands, but luckily Crash showed up and was able to get some great shots. I think this could end up being a go to venue in the future. Although since Magic Johnson and Katt Williams were hosting the afterparty and Quincy Jones is having a party there in August, maybe it already is.
