For the fifth time in the last six years we made the 1200 mile trek from Long Beach , California to the middle of Washington for Sasquatch Festival. Since Interstate 5 is so boring we heading up the coast and took a couple extra days. The night before things got started we stayed just a bit north in Wenatchee. When I woke up I had Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros‘ “Home” stuck in my head. Since our stereo is busted in our new truck it made for the perfect soundtrack as we drove the The Gorge.
Our parking situation is a bit funky this year and we’re having to spend half the day up top behing the bigfoot stage and half the day down by the mainstage. We got lucky on Saturday because both Patrick Watson and Edward Sharpe were playing up top and we wrangled them into playing a song for us. I had no idea there was a collection of little mountains of lava rocks a few hundred feet from us and we made our way over there to check out Patrick, his band, and his super-cool backpack sound system. We really need to get something like that on the truck for Road Trippin’, especially since I forgot my megaphone at home.
Mumford and Sons was also on the Bigfoot stage and they stopped by to cut a ribbon inauguraing our new truck, Beauregard. This was the first day we’ve slang from our new ride and they were excited to be part of the celebration. They’ll be hitting the festival circuit this summer so we’ll try to get them to play a song for us sometime down the road.
We were supposed to move the truck at 5:00 but that was when Edward Sharpe was finishing up. We wanted to get the whole band together and we knew this would be the best time to get them to play something. We headed a li’l ways behind the stage to rows of grape vines. Portugal. The Man was taking the stage any minute and we didn’t want the sound bleeding through so we started up as quick as we good. About a minute into “Home” a security guard came over to kick us out because we were on private propery. We didn’t want to stop filming so we started walking backwards with the cameras and the microphone until we were back on festival grounds.
There was loads of good music the rest of the weekend with Pavement and MGMT having played the next two nights. We had to get out of there on Tuesday to get to Wakarusa on time, another festival we missed last year and were excited to get back to.
