I, as well as most of us here at Ice Cream Man, am a huge fan of All Tomorrow’s Parties. So much so that I’ve been to every one they’ve thrown in the US as well as a couple in England. It’s fun to give away ice cream there but we’ve always wanted to contribute something more, like an art project.
So, this year, I had an idea. I’ve broken out my collection of smurf figurines (don’t laugh) to send to New York. Since it’s a bit boring to just have a bunch of blue figures hanging around up there we’re asking any and all of our artist friends to see if they’d like to paint a few of them to contribute to our ‘show.’ The good news is, it’s REALLY easy. You can choose 3-4 (more or less if desired) smurfs from this checklist and email cory@icecreamman.com and he’ll send them with a set of enamel paints (if you need them) and a stamped return envelope to ATP. The kicker is that all packages MUST be shipped by Friday the 27th of August in order to get there in time.
Once the smurfs arrive we’ll be putting them all on display together in the hotel lobby/festival area for people to see. Information about you, your smurfs and other stuff (website, stickers, postcards, whatever you’d like) will be made available too. We will have a simple silent auction for the Smurfs with all money going to buy art supplies for 826 National, a tutoring program for kids in cities around the country. For any smurfs that aren’t bid on we’ll donate them to one of the 826 centers where they can put them on display and sell them to raise money for art supplies.
If you’re planning to head out to ATP to see our little art project (or for the bands, whichever) tickets are now on sale as well as lodging and bus rides from NYC and Philly.
I think this will be a fun, goofy project and can’t wait to see what you come up with!
