Sometimes I forget that the Austin City Limits music festival was spawned from the live music PBS show that’s been around for over 35 years. It sounds ridiculous but when you don’t watch much TV nor are lucky to enough to live in Austin and go to tapings of the show, it just slips your mind. I’m usually reminded of this when I get to Austin for ACL fest and hear of all the bands that will be doing tapings during the week. Most of the time I can’t make any of them because I’m working all weekend and the shows that bookend the festival are hard to get tickets too. I did see Bloc Party a few years back and tonight Doug and I were lucky to get a pair of tickets for Monsters of Folk, which I was ridiculously excited about.
My excuse about not watching TV and therefor not being able to watch Austin City Limits are no longer valid because I just found out that PBS is streaming a ton of performances. I’ve been rocking out to the Avett Brothers and Heartless Bastards set episode this morn and am about to fire up either Pearl Jam or Andrew Bird/St. Vincent. I wonder if they’ll put up The Mavericks performance for 10 or 12 years ago, that was one of my favorites
Thanks to Austin City Limits for the awesome Monsters of Folk show last night, it was my favorite live one i’ve seen, especially M. Ward on “Slow Down Joe.” This year Sonic Youth, Band of Horses, The National and Black Keys are all doing sets this week that will air next season.
