A year and a half ago I started getting short updates on a new project that a friend was starting in New York. Everything was vague and the term that kept coming up was ‘urban exploring’. It definitely struck my attention and over the course of 18 months I would find out more about what has come to be known as The Underbelly Project. The whole art project was centered around finding a vacant, unused subway station that was built decades ago that could only be accessed through secret ladders and a lot of dirt.
Artists were invited from all over the world to participate in The Underbelly Project and the creators would sneak down in the middle of the night and work for hours on murals in the station. Everything was documented but no one was ever invited to actually view the art. It was created to live beneath the streets of NYC just for the purpose of being there. Last week the New York Times featured a story on The Underbelly Project on their front page and you should check out some pics and get some more information if you’re interested. If you’re into murals and street art you should also check out Primary Flight during Art Basel in Miami this December. Many of the same artists will be participating there and adding to the hundreds of murals that already exist from the last three years of Primary Flight
