I was lucky to get invited to the 31st Annual Razzie Awards the night before the Academy Awards, held at the Barnsdall Gallery Theater. It has become an institution that has poked fun at the hallowed Hollywood establishment and makes light of the “Crap” that is spewed from the studios. Being on the eve of the Academy Awards, it has moved from an obscure event to one that is now covered internationally. The world is interested in who and what were the worst in motion pictures. Perhaps even a cameo appearance and acceptance speech by a winner, as Sandra Bullock did last year for her “Worst Actress” award for “All About Steve.”
The Award show itself was as entertaining as it was meant to be a satirical homage to bad acting. The cast of presenters made up of what seemed like understudies from the local community theater. It was fun watching these so-called actors work their way through the presentation of the year’s “Worst” awards. Working in little parodies of the films actually nominated for actual Academy Awards into the presentation of the envelopes. (ie. The arm of a mannequin to spoof “127 Hours” to bring out the envelope)
This year’s big winners were “The Last Airbender” with 4 Razzies and “Sex & The City 2” with 3 Razzies. Neither of which I had seen. The best category of the night, which was a special category for 2010, was the “Worst Eye-Gouging Mis-Use of 3-D” that was won by none-other-than “The Last Airbender”. But for any of you who might take this seriously, you might want to consider becoming a voting member of the “The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation”. The can watch previous Razzie moments on YouTube here.
In the end there was an acceptance speech for the Worst Picture won by “The Last Airbender”, but it wasn’t by M. Night Shyamalan as every hoped for. It was made by Russell Peters, the comedian, and a close facsimile to M. Night. In fact he was the 12th Indian person on list to be asked to make this acceptance speech, right behind the Metro PCS guys. Next year I will make sure I see all the bad movies that are nominated so I have a better appreciation of the award categories.
