Kyuss comes back to life with Kyuss Lives!
For those who don’t know who Kyuss is, they are a California based Desert Rock band that existed in the 1990’s. Now the band has reformed as Kyuss Lives, minus founding member Josh Homme. In reference to the new band name, John Garcia stated that “there is never going to be a Kyuss without Josh Homme.”. Now reformed as Kyuss Lives the current lineup of the band is John Garcia, Brant Bjork, Nick Oliveri and their new member, Belgian guitarist Bruno Fevery.
I recently saw the band in Philadelphia at the well known venue, The Trocadero. The bassist for Kyuss Lives, Nick Oliveri had rejoined the tour just the night before. Kyuss’ other former bassist Scott Reader had taken his place on the earlier Canadian dates. Opening for Kyuss Lives was Monstro and The Sword. Monstro went on first and even though the Troc was only half full at that point they absolutely rocked. Their music can be best described as heavy doom metal. This was the first time I had seen them live, but I would definitely see them again. The same goes for The Sward, the second band of the night, they are a must see. They have a kind of an old school feel, they actually reminded me a little of Black Sabbath. They played a fantastic and energetic set.
I turned around after The Sword left the stage and the Troc was nearly full. Then Kyuss Lives hit the stage! If you didn’t look up there you might think it was 1992. They started off with “Gardenia” and then plowed through some of the best songs from their catalog. I had never seen a Kyuss show back then, but I always heard they don’t stop, talk or mess around. They just play, barely taking a breath between songs, they still play that way. Though the band did take a brief break before their encore, then ended the set with “Allen’s Wrench” and “Green Machine”.
All three bands were awesome! Their styles meshed well making for a cohesive show. If Kyuss Lives is touring anywhere near you I recommend that you go, even if you never heard of them before, it’s just great music!
