Satellite Party is the latest stage in the evolution of Jane’s Addiction front man and Lollapalooza mastermind, Perry Farrell. Having grown up with Jane’s Addiction in high school and Porno for Pyros in college and being consistently pleased by Perry Farrell’s “solo” projects since, I was eager to get to House of Blues and see where the eccentric icon would be taking his music next.
New York/Australian newcomers Mink kicked of the night with a rowdy set that, combined with free Vodka provided by local Vegas magazine 944, geared up the crowd for a night of fun. Terry, a friend at the show, kept commenting on Mink lead-singer Neal Carlson’s resemblance to a younger Perry Farrell. Maybe a bit of a stretch, but the band was a perfect fit for Satellite Party, and I imagine that late nights backstage with these two bands are quite the happenin’ scene. It just seemed like everyone was having a great time
Satellite Party opened with “Wish Upon a Dogstar” off their album Ultra Payloaded and followed with more new hits and old favorites like “Tahitian Moon”, “Mountain Song”, “Superhero” (Entourage TV show theme), “Pets”, “Been Caught Stealing”, and the timeless “Jane Says” as a closer. In between periodic toasts to the crowd and a brief pause to repair a wardrobe malfunction (what did he expect trying to dance around in pants that tight) Mr. Farrell was a non-stop blur of motion and sound. I haven’t seen anything like it since seeing Mick Jagger prance across the stage at Shea stadium when my father took me to see the Rolling Stones in 1989. As always, Perry Farrell has put together another top-notch ensemble including Nick Perri on guitar, Carl Restivo on bass, Jordan Plosky on drums, and of course his beautiful wife Etty Lau Farrell (ELF), back-up vocalist and trained classical ballerina (according to Wikipedia).
As always, Perry Farrell never fails to disappoint. The show was great and Terry and I partied until the wee hours (standard Las Vegas Wednesday). That bastard won $2600 dollars and I managed to lose $100 in about 10 minutes. Can’t wait to make it back to HOB for some more shows
