The Dan Band is a strange conglomeration of comedy and music centered around the antics of comedian front-man Dan Finnerty. My friend Joe had been telling me about their show for months, so when they came to The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino for a Christmas extravaganza, I decided to check it out. I must admit, I was a bit nervous that the Dan Band would be heavy on cheese and light on substance. The shtick: covering chick songs with a bad attitude, profanity and dance moves that are hilarious if not very creative Im a genie in a bottle baby You gotta rub me the right way Im sure you can imagine!
The music was tight Dans lounge/comedy act between songs was hilarious But hands down the best part of The Dan Band show, was the stage interaction between Dan and his seemingly overworked and I imagine underpaid back-up guys. As Dan grimaces and thrusts across the stage, they attempt to keep up as if they really didnt have much time to rehearse on top of their day jobs. They hustle around trying to make up for Dans miscues and catch up with his boy-band knee/pelvis thrust moves. This is all of course intentional, and they play the perfect straight-men to Dan Finnertys huge a-hole stage persona. I imagine it probably takes hours of practice to perfect that level of nonchalance while still managing to hit the dance moves perfect when it counts.
So, bottomline Go catch The Dan Band! The Joint aced it by having tables set up in the general admission area front-stage, which created the lounge-like atmosphere that Dan thrives in. I suggest seeing them in a similar venue, and plan on laughing for two hours straight.
P.S. Be ready to get ridiculed and have your wife/girlfriend harassed ruthlessly if you are within 15 feet of the stage.
