Little Radio is known for throwing great parties. When we heard they were having an Xmas party this year, we rounded up a bunch of the ice cream crew and headed to downtown LA for a night filled with great music Dead Meadow, The Henry Clay People, and Rosewood Thieves, free drinks from Dewar’s and Tito’s Vodka, and free hot chocolate.
Ever since working at Dagoba Organic Chocolate in Ashland, Oregon and learning about the Cocomotion hot chocolate making machine, I’ve wanted to make hot chocolate at an Xmas party. This night was a lil’ different because my brother and I went to see Stevie Wonder before hand so Gooch ran the show and mixed up his custom concoction for everyone.
By the time I arrived the party was already in full stride. The Henry Clay People, who I have been wanting to see for some time, were on stage dressed as Santas and Gooch was setup near the bar with a small table and two cocomotion machines spinning non-stop. Naturally, the first thing I did was order up a cup. There might have been some extra mixes around to spice things up but I was driving back to Long Beach so I kept it to hot cocoa and whip cream. Mmmm…..mmmm… good. It hit the spot on a cool winter night.
Generally I would rather be a contributor than a spectator. There were a handful of things that needed attending to so I helped empty out some trash cans, reload ice for the bar, and help Gooch a bit. For the record, I’m pretty sure he made ALL the hot cocoa that night. There were a bunch of Ice Cream Crew in effect and we all spent a lot of time catching up on things and enjoying the festive spirit.
I hadn’t actually canvassed the club and once Dead Meadow went on, I walked around the newly christened white and snowy Little Radio and watched Dead Meadow perform under oversized snowflakes hung from the ceiling. They have a new record coming out soon, Old Growth, and if I were more familiar with their music, I’d prolly tell you they played some tracks from it.
Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and before we realized, it was almost two in the morn. We took the cooler out of the back of Bessita and dropped it into Bill Ross’ car then loaded up the crew and headed back to Long Beach.
There are some rumors flying around that Little Radio will be undergoing some major changes in the next few months. We’ll keep you posted on what we find out.
