Shout Out Louds dropped into Fingerprints on Sunday on their way to San Diego. This was the biggest band Fingerprints has hosted and they had to take out the stage just to make room for all the gear. Even with the cramped quarters and sound glitches, the professionalism and general happiness of the band made for a very enjoyable and varied set.
The night before I was at the Wiltern to see them open for Kings of Leon and The Secret Machines. Being in a large venue with many new ears, SOL relied on rockin cuts to grab everyone’s attention. Here, they mixed it up a bit and slowed down tracks like “The Comeback” til it hit ballad status. Other tracks, like “A Track and a Train” and “Please Please Please”, were mixed with influences from bossanova and down-right folk. It’s the best way to play to an intimate audience. Your not going to be able to capture the over-the-top rock show so why not mix it up and make it unique. Another rare track from the Canadian release also highlighted the set. This is why you don’t pass up free shows when you get the chance. You’ll probably never be able the hear these versions again.
After the set the whole band headed to the front of the store to sign posters from the event. Once the line mellowed out, I brought over some Julie’s Organic Ice Cream treats and they all indulged. They were very nice and patient considering they were playing a gig in San Diego in a few hours.
