Frank from the Voodoo Glow Skulls has a good thing going here in Havasu. A venue, Havasu Underground, catering to all ages as well as adult music lovers. Sunday’s show featured Phoenix’s hottest rising act The Stiletto Formal. Billed as an art rock act I saw Mindless Self Indulgence without the punk rock look and Arcade Fire’s instrumental passion. Lead singer Kyle Howard alternates a high end falsetto with clean excellent vocals. Add to this his exhortations backed by bassist Paul Neely swinging his ax over his shoulders and guitarists Jimi Lamp’s souring licks. Two Beautiful girls Cellist Sunny Davis and Shelly Barnes round out the exciting stage show. The music is dancable at times but mostly mezmerizing. Their self released ep is called “Masochism in the Place of Romance” It is a worthy representation of what this band offers live. Listen and you won’t hesitate buying a ticket to the next show.”Mistress and the Matador” is a sing along song for sure.

Seattle, known for its indie and grunge sound contributed Forgive Durden. Not just an opening act but a deserving headliner. I would say they are as good on record as Taking Back Sunday. But, they are better live and redefining EMO as a more mainstream sound. Their self released ep When You’re Alone, You’re Not Alone offers up some nice gems like “Jamais Vu” and “I am a Heart, Watson” Both hit material.

Orange County’s Hopefield opened the evening with another excellent live show. I hate to repeat myself but yet another potential hit maker. My favorite song on the ep, “The Scott Baio Thing” could be huge. Check out the record Pictographs
