Datarock made a stop in LA after an amazing week of shows at South By Southwest. When they stopped in LA, they played not only one, but two shows, with the first night at Safari Sam’s and the second night at Spaceland. Jeremiah and I made it out to the sold out Spaceland show after catching one of their sets at SxSW and being thoroughly impressed.
Datarock played an incredibly energetic set at Spaceland. Their self-titled album is full of fun danceable tracks. Datarock has recently been classified as a “nu-rave” band (a term coined by NME), which translates roughly into electronic dance rock with guitars and a punk influence, but it’s hard to label exactly what they do, nor is it necessary to enjoy their music. In fact, Datarock even made reference to their “nu-rave” genre pigeonhole during the set and joked about it.
Regardless of what they are, Datarock ham it up on stage as only some crazy Norwegians can. They all dress in matching track suits and dark-framed sunglasses and constantly command the audience to clap, dance, sing along, etc. With songs like “Computer Camp Love” and “I Used To Dance With My Daddy,” the craziness that ensues on stage is almost self-explanatory based on song titles alone. “FaFaFa” was a highlight of their set when they got the whole crowd singing “Fa, fa, fa, fa, fa, fa” and dancing. With their new album out now, expect to see more of these crazy fellows.
