Los Abandoned’s Ice Cream Social Record Release Party

Sometime around Xmas last year Timothy headed to the Echo for Los Abandoned’s Winter Formal. Once he sent the pictures over I knew they were a band I had to check out. I rocked a few of their myspace tracks and then kept in touch with them while traveling around the country. A couple months ago Lady P asked me if I’d be interested in giving away ice cream at their Ice Cream Social/Record Release Party. It happened to be on my birthday and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend it.

The morning of the show Los Abandoned played live on Indie 103.1. The plan was to join them in the studio a bit but the two hours in LA traffic got the better of me. The good part was that I got to hear the whole set while stuck in Bessita. Once I arrived at the studio, I dished out some Creamsicles and bite sized Dagoba Chocolate bars. Then we chatted for a couple minuted on air before I headed over to pick up some cream for the night.

Gregg and I arrived rather early to the Troubadour and started dishing out the goods. It was pretty slow going at first. Once the venue started getting packed and everyone realized it was free the treats really started to fly. I wasn’t able to catch any of the opening bands but once Los Abandoned went on I locked up Bessita and headed in side with the gang.

The thing I like most about Los Abandoned’s new album, Mixtape is that it’s all over the place. There’s a Christmas song and about a fifty split between English and Spanish tracks. A few of my favorites that night were “Nada Mio es Fake”, “Heavy” and “Office Xmas Party”. The change of pace toward the end with “State of Affairs” put a huge smile on my face. There aren’t all that many bands that actually sound like they’re from Los Angeles. Los Abandoned mixes their tunes up and draws a crowd that’s just as diverse. You should call up Indie 103 (800.971.1031) and request “Stalk You” or any of their other songs. You can hear some snippets at www.losabandoned.com as well. Looks like they’ll be on tour opening for Birdmonster throughout October so keep an ear open and your dance shoes on.
