Denver to KC for Gil Mantera?

What an amazing day. Woke up in Denver then skipped down after grab a rather scrumptious bagel sandwich with Disco Dan. Just past the airport on I-70 I noticed two guys hitch hiking and decided to see where they were headed. (brief side note….I’ve hiked over 5000 miles and in doing so, have had to hitch hike a ton to get to towns to get food and supplies. So i’ve still got a lot of karma to repay.) Vince and Brent hopped in and we headed east. The drive from Denver to Kansas City is my second least favorite drive behind crossing Texas and having some companionship was definitely gonna be a plus.

From the moment I got in the truck, the temperature registered over 90 degrees. As the day went on the temp kept rising and by the time we reached Colby, Kansas, the gauge for the engine/radiator was reading 230. After some grub we pulled into a self service car wash and blasted the radiator to get rid of some of the bugs I had collected on the way from Oregon. We realized that the grill was keeping some air from getting through to the engine so we spent a bit to remove it to see if it my help. We got back on the road for a mad push to KC. Hate to say that neither one really made a difference.

Late that night I dropped off Vince and Brent in Lawrence then crossed the river into Missouri to meet Greg at The Record Bar to catch the last few tracks of Gil Mantera’s Party Dream. I had been on the road for 14 hours and haven’t showered for four days but neither of those was stopping me from getting. Gil was covering Fleetwood Mac when I entered then Donny jumped back on stage to bring the funk and dance grooves. I couldn’t believe what was going down…..why was I here? I popped down a couple PBR’s and shot some pics and danced as much as possible. As I left there was a gal leaning against the side of Bessie peeing. ha, that’s a new one. tried to snap a pic from the other side of her feet and the puddle but don’t think it did the beauty justice.

Now I’m crashing before taking care of some business tomorrow, picking up some ice cream, then heading to Wakarusa. A long weekend awaits and if I’m lucky enough to see Avett Brothers at 4, I’ll be happy.
