Penny Ante Book Release Party at Little Radio

Part of the reason we review so many concerts here is that I just don’t get out in Bessie enough to keep the site fresh with Ice Cream Man adventures. That’s all about to change because Bessie and I are leaving at FOUR in the morning on Tuesday to start an insane cross country trip that will be taking us to most of the major music festivals in the country. We’ll be starting it out with Sasquatch Festival at the Gorge this weekend. Y’all should come on out and dig the tunes of NIN, Bauhaus, Ben Harper, Neko Case, Beck, Death Cab, Queens of the Stone Age, and a gazillion more awesome bands. They’ve got the schedule posted now too.

Thanks to Mochi Ice Cream I was able to sling a ton of cream all weekend. Jeremiah skipped work for a bit and headed by Mikawaya to pick up 15 cases of Mochi then dropped it off in the Little Radio Freezer where Bessie and I were going to be spending most of the night. That night I stopped by and loaded up a few cases early on then headed up to the adidas Originals store for their one-year anniversary party that was being throw by the folks at Vapors. It worked out great because there was a parking spot saved right out front and due to official capacity not being that much, there was a line of folks that I got to taunt with free cream. Dished some for an hour or so then headed back across town to Little Radio.

The reason for the party at Little Radio was the launch the launch of Penny Ante’s Book #1. I had stopped by Little Radio a couple days before and flipped through a copy and was quite impressed with the mix of art and literature that it contained. There’s way too much stuff in there to try to break down. Ok….here’s a few: Josephine Foster, Love Christine, Xiu Xiu, My Morning Jacket, Devendra Banhardt, Lion Fever, and dozens more.

I’ve been rocking LR parties for a while but this was the first night I actually pulled the truck inside the warehouse. It was quite nice to not have to be out front and separate from the action. I could hear the bands well and sorta see them. Feast started things out sounded pretty cool then Bubonic Plague stepped up with a screen centered against the back of the stage that had a girl singing and dancing on it. Still not quite sure about that one but, can’t hurt to try something different…right? Little Claw took the stage next and rocked the house proper (as T would say). Indian Jewelry closed out the night doing what they do best. Meaning..if I did not have to be at the Neighborhood Fest early the next day, I would have been a bit outta my head, dancing like a hippy, and sleeping in the truck at Little Radio. I always questioned so many bands referring to their music on myspace as psychedelic. Indian Jewelry does not, yet they warrant it more than 99% of the bands that do list it. It’s just a freak out…

I needed to catch some Z’s and it was almost two in the morn so I headed over to Farmer Boy’s on Alameda to grab a bite and a soda to hopefully keep me awake for the trek back to Long Beach. Gave the crew there a handful of treats then hopped on the freeway. I knew I’d need some energy for the Neighborhood Festival the next day where I’d be slingin Mochi all day. Check back tomorrow for a ton of pics and some words from there.
