4th Annual Rock Paper Scissors Rumble – Downtown

Saturday night under the First Street bridge in downtown Los Angeles, there was a rumble like no other. I had been hearing about it for months. Even with all my research, I still was unsure of exactly what was gonna go down. It was billed as the 4th Annual Rock Paper Scissors Rumble (RPS4)and it was obvious some people were taking the tournament very seriously.

One of the first creatures I saw upon entering was a gigantic Cookie Monster Pinata. Much bigger than the Cookie Monster that is currently residing on the ice cream truck. This giant Cookie Monster also spoke and it didn’t take me too long to realize he was here to take down all the other RPS competitors.

The plan all along was to pull Bessie inside for the festivities. The only problem was that she hasn’t wanted to start since Thursday. I loaded up my extra large cooler with treats and threw it in the back of my car and headed north. The shoulder sling system worked great all night because it allowed for mobility and freedom. I did learn that dancing with that thing on wasn’t too easy though. (Any recommendations for a name for the sling side kick?).

After some tunes by Kennedy and a few passes around the party the formal competition began. The referees first cleared everyone back behind a large chalk circle on the asphalt. A beautiful lady on the mic glanced at the bracket board on stage and called for two contestants and they made their way through the crowd to the center of the circle. The professionals even brought their own cheerleaders to root them on. There were some great costumes in the house. My favorite was probably Dr. Dreidel. Chun Li was quite stunning and Sloppy Poppy had great action in the ring. Check the Party Scammers site for the official standings on who survived and conquered. They’ve got a bunch more pics here too.

Once the main round was over, most of the people stuck around and either got their groove on outside or moved in for a drink and mixed it up at the dance party inside. It was a no lose situation. I refilled on some cream and it was all gone in less than ten minutes. I Walked around and talked to some cool people then snagged a few of the Function Drinks which are supposed to help keep you from getting hangovers. Can’t hurt to have some of those around.

As I headed home I couldn’t stop thinking about next year and my costume.
Mr. Freeeeeeze…..stops em cold in their tracks. I’d be unstoppable. Can’t wait for that one.

Check back here for some more pics and links to video if we can track em down.
