Dr. Dog, The Teeth, and Sam Champion at Mercury Lounge NYC

Who knows why, but Dr Dog has nibbled out a sizable place in my poor heart. Perhaps it is because their most recent album Easy Beat has such a simple feel-good sound and it came to me in a time of much Stravinsky and Don Caballero. Its Lo-Fi, and I know Lo-Fi is so hip right now, but it does sound different. Like you’re hearing it live, only from the next room. And I know this is probably blasphemy, but it’s sort of like a Beatles album. Can’t ignore it. Can’t deny it. I just love it.

The show was pretty nice. Yeah, I said it, nice. The night before we went to one of the Broken Social Scene shows at Webster Hall. I just don’t know what to do with this band. I’m on the fence. I really really hate gimmicks, but then again some of their album material is great. Who cares, they have enough fans, don’t need me. So to be back at the Mercury Lounge with three small bands was nice.

Sam Champion opened up the Mercury Lounge show. Still can’t get past the fact that they have the same name as the tri-state’s most watched weatherman (since 1988). Yeah research. So everyone says that this band is our new Pavement. So then I say to everyone – shut up, stop looking for a new Pavement. Love the Pavement you have or had rather. It’s such a cheap comparison. Even though I drew that one with the Beatles 240 words earlier, just ignore it.

Next The Teeth played, they are friends of Dr. Dog’s from Philly. I’ve actually been wanting to see them for a while, unfortunately I missed most of their set due to some stupidity. Carolyn and Adam said they played pretty well though, and you should trust them.

Most of Dr. Dog’s set was comprised of danceable delectables off of Easy Beat. The crowd was digging it as far as I could surmise, also, the crowd had grown substantially since the first time I saw them over the summer. Okay, so, if it is any indication of how much I enjoyed the show, I have three large black and blues right below my left hip from hitting the stage while dancing it out with Rachel. Oh yes, and lest we forget, one very tender spot right in the middle of my left ribcage where the girl next to me elbowed me four, count them, four times. Her black heart hates dancing only slightly more than puppies and kisses. It would have been a fist fight were I not so sedated. Anyways, in the end, this is just a hard working band with a fair bit of talent and some quality songs under their belt.

So all in all, it was a really nice show. I met a lot of really nice people, had even more really nice steel reserve. And the bruises are healing really nicely.
