The long line of people, cops surveying the scene, and incense burning from a sidewalk tree at The Roxy would deem it as an average night in West Hollywood. Yet upon entering the intimate venue, it became apparent that many had flocked to this event for a more engaging experience. Major props go to Scion because, unlike a traditional Sunset Strip experience, drinks were not only affordable, they were borderline cheap.
While DJ’s Classixx and T&T warmed up the vibrant and eagerly locomotive crowd with soulful interludes and beat deconstructions, the night’s triumph surely goes to YACHT. As the band is no longer a one man beat-making prodigious project, the boyfriend/girlfriend duo proved to be an extremely well matched and innovative collaboration. Together they were an avant-garde masterpiece of irony, wit, and incredible back beats, coupling the musicians strong suits. Bringing a fan up on stage, doing a power point presentation with call-and-response, dancing in the audience, and getting in Nick’s face, YACHT established a quirky relationship with the crowd, one they didn’t even seem to expect – ending out the night with Claire saying, “Thank you Los Angeles, you were very affectionate, physically. This last song is…Fk it, it’s for you.”
The evening was taken out by a seamless mix from The Juan MacLean, strong way to usher out an evening of great music and an overwhelming display of dance moves. Behold! Scion knows how to throw a killer party.
