While in Austin crashing at Doug’s house after SXSW, I found a magazine I hadn’t heard of before, Oxford American. They put out four issues a year, one of them being their southern music issue. Normally it came with 2 CDs and most of the tracks and artists on the CD were directly referenced in the magazine.
After flipping through it and seeing all the good music i knew, and the stuff i was dying to find out about (like Elton and Betty White!?!), I had to order to back issue and get the 56 tracks of southern music ranging from blues to jazz to rock to anything else you can imagine coming out of the South in the last hundred years.
Pick up a copy of the music issues, with Jerry Lee Lewis on the cover, or subscribe for a full year… it’s awesome
