Boomkat at The Roxy

For those unfamiliar, many may see Boomkat as a vanity project for Taryn Manning, probably best known for her film roles in 8 Mile, Hustle & Flow, and co-starring with Britney Spears in Crossroads. If you peel back the layers here however, you will find a very talented brother / sister duo that both write and perform catchy electronic pop jams.

Playing a special “Rock The Vote” concert at the Roxy Theatre, Boomkat infused old with new for the duration of their 45 minute super set. Boomkat pushed their new material heavily by leaning mostly on tracks from their self released new album A Million Trillion Stars. They opened the show with the beat heavy “Run Boy.” Three female backup dancers cut the rug with Taryn in unison to accentuate the song and get everyone in the audience loosened up a bit. “The Wreckoning” followed along with a cover of the Matthew Wilder 80’s classic “Break My Stride.” They brought the show to a close with the crowd favorite “What You Do To Me” from their 2003 DreamWorks release Boomkatalog One. Taryn invited a bunch of concert goers up on stage to dance to the last tune and it felt more like a party than a show by the time it was all over. It was a welcome feeling in a city where most audiences are stingy with their emotions.

Throughout the evening, Taryn’s brother Kellin perfected his loops and beats and acted more as a band conductor than a performer. His unheralded guidance, poise, and talent is what catapults the Boomkat sound to the next level. Check them out!
