When you see all ages on the door, you might not expect to see families miming the directions of Dan Deacon. Well at the Vera Project, all ages really does promote the air of everyone and anyone. A teen club booking big names like Iron & Wine and Why? gets yet another group of 2009 obsession: Dan Deacon. Every age, every genre, every hairline, and every eye glasses prescription attended the show with a knowledge of a show based on audience participation. Dan Deacon with a voice of an inspirational speaker had the all-ages crowd follow his lead of hand gestures and dance competitions. While he got the whole venue looking in the opposite direction, he spoke into the mic with phrases like, “Touch the person’s head in front of you and think of someone that you hate…” as he speaks, he fixes his setup after the damage of dancing fans. Does he do this to buy time or to get everyone closer through his words and guidelines of what to do at every moment. Light shows and sounds were all controlled by his touch with constant sweat dripping from every part of his being.
Opening for Dan was 10 person band Nuclear Power Pants. Five of which in matching head pieces and costumes made out of felt, three as back up singers wearing the same school girl uniform, and two main vocalists that seem to be twin brothers about to head to a business meeting. Songs like “Uh Oh” and “Screw Driver” got the crowd moving while the band onstage danced around with their black lights and neon felt.
