When I was 18 years old, attending college at Long Beach City, I needed a car, bad. I spent over a year looking for an old van from the 60’s but could never find one in good shape. One sunny weekend I went to Veteran’s Stadium for an American Cancer Society Auction. My friend, Fast Eddie, saw a 1969 Chrysler Newport that looked to be in good condition then told me it only had 60,000 miles on it. I honestly wasn’t all that interested but when the price was about to close for only $1,300 it was too good an offer to pass up. When I bought it I had no idea that Lucy (or better put, Loosey) would last me 13 years.
In that time I’ve driven her all over the place. She’s been to Colorado a few time, Oregon at least a couple, and she even got me out to Austin, Texas when I reopened the Hole in the Wall. She’s needed some brake work and the front suspension is completely shot but she’s never let me down.
When I started Ice Cream Man a couple years ago I knew there would be a time when I’d have to sell her. It only seemed natural that I was destined to only own an ice cream truck for my transportation. Plus, I knew the couple grand I could hopefully get would be helpful too. Since I’m getting ready to drive cross country for 3 months and I owe my mechanic $1400 (no, I don’t wanna talk about it) now is the perfect time to send Lucy into another’s care.
So, last week I cleaned her up then took a bunch of pics and threw em up on ebay. Sometime tomorrow, Wednesday, the auction will close and I’ll be a few bucks richer. I was going through some tough times last week but I think I’ve already come to terms with it by now. After hiking the Appalachian Trail I looked back and realized the best moments of my life were when I had thirty pounds on my back and nothing else. Since then I’ve tried to steer clear of owning the newest toys and gadgets. I’ve still got a few things that are gonna be tough to get rid of but as long as I’ve got an ice cream truck, a handful of art (will be nice on walls once I get a place), music, and a nice machine that will make that music sound really good, I think I’m content. I guess I need the business stuff too, like computer and camera too…. and this lamp….that’s all I need.
Ok, enough fun and games at midnight. I’ve exhausted any sympathy I coulda got buy now. This all is just some borderline shameful media ploy meant to bring more money into the ICM coffers. Next up ….. a smurf collection.
The auction closes tomorrow, Wednesday at 10:30 in the morn, pacific time. If you’re in need of a nice dependable ride and can throw a few bucks into getting her dialed in, then please bid away.
Could I have get pictures and some information of Chrysler Newport 1969?
Thanks.
